-Luster
When you encounter a magnificent pearl, the first thing that will strike you is the beauty of its luster. A pearl's luster is created by the combination of two types of shine: "surface luster," which is the reflection of light off its smooth surface, and "inner luster," which is the glow emitted when light enters the nacre layers and reflects off the nacre crystals. At Orv, we carefully select pearls with an elegant, bright luster and rich interference colors that appear as pinkish iridescence.
-Nacre Thickness
"Nacre thickness" refers to the thickness of the nacre layer. A thick and uniform nacre layer produces a beautiful and deep "luster" and also offers superior durability, making it a very important factor. Nacre thickness is also related to the length of the cultivation period: the shorter the period, the thinner the nacre layer. However, a longer cultivation period requires more care and increases the risk that a pearl will fail to meet other selection criteria. Pearls that meet all these standards are therefore even rarer and more valuable.
-Blemishes
Blemishes on pearls are sometimes called "dimples" and refer to protrusions, indentations, or spots that occur during the process of a pearl's creation. These marks reflect each pearl's natural growth and individuality. Orv carefully selects pearls with as few blemishes, such as bumps and dents, as possible, and creates designs that bring out each pearl's quality and unique character.
-Shape
Even when pearls grow in the same sea and in the same species of oyster, no two are alike, and they come in a variety of shapes. Orv carefully selects rare pearls that are as close to perfectly round as possible.
-Size
For perfectly round pearls, size is generally measured by diameter in millimeters. Orv uses the finest Japanese Akoya pearls. Pearls measuring 7–8 mm are versatile enough for a wide range of occasions and are an ideal choice for your first piece of pearl jewelry. Pearls measuring 8.0 mm or more are known as large pearls, or "oodama" in Japanese. Their striking presence and greater rarity lend an added touch of elegance. Their value differs significantly from that of smaller pearls. Akoya pearls measuring 9.0 mm or more are produced in very small quantities, making them exceptionally rare and precious.
-Color
Akoya pearls come in a wide range of colors. At Orv, our standard is an exquisite, elegant white base with a bright luster and rich interference colors that appear as pinkish iridescence.
