Orv’s Six Criteria

- Luster (Teri)
When you encounter a magnificent pearl, the first thing that will catch your eye is the beauty of its luster. A pearl’s luster is created by the combination of two types: “surface luster,” which shines as light reflects off its smooth surface, and “inner luster,” which is the radiance emitted when light penetrates the nacre and reflects off its crystalline structure. At Orv, we carefully select pearls that possess a high-quality luster characterized by an elegant, bright sheen and rich iridescence—a pinkish rainbow hue known as “interference color.”

- Nacre Thickness (Maki)
“Maki” refers to the thickness of the nacre. The thicker and more uniform it is, the more beautiful and deep the luster it produces, and the greater its durability, making this a very important factor. Maki is also related to the pearl’s cultivation period; the shorter the period, the thinner the nacre. However, extending the cultivation period increases the labor involved and the risk of failing to meet other standards (factors that could result in the pearl being rejected during selection), which further enhances its rarity and value.

- Blemishes (Ekubo)
Blemishes in pearls, also known as “ekubo” (dimples), refer to protrusions, indentations, or spots that occur during the pearl-forming process. While these are a testament to the pearl’s natural growth and represent the unique character of each pearl, Orv carefully selects only those with minimal blemishes, such as unevenness, and delivers them to you through designs that maximize the quality and individuality of each pearl.

- Shape
Even when cultivated in the same sea and by the same species of oyster, no two pearls are exactly alike—they come in a variety of shapes. The pearls used by Orv are carefully selected from among these, choosing only those that are as close to perfectly round as possible and are exceptionally rare.

- Size
For perfectly round pearls, size is generally expressed as the pearl’s diameter in millimeters. At Orv, we use Japan’s finest Akoya pearls. The 7–8 mm size is generally versatile enough for any occasion and is recommended as a first pearl jewelry piece. Pearls 8.0 mm and larger are called “Oodama” (large pearls); they have a striking presence and greater rarity, making them even more glamorous pieces to wear. There is a significant difference in value between pearls 8.0 mm and larger and those smaller than that. Furthermore, Akoya pearls measuring 9.0 mm or larger are exceptionally rare and considered truly special pieces.

- Color
While Akoya pearls come in a wide range of colors, at Orv, we offer the highest quality colors as our standard. These feature a beautiful, elegant white base with a bright luster and rich iridescence—a pinkish rainbow hue known as “interference color.”

We recommend registering for our membership program so you can enjoy your precious jewelry for many years to come. We carefully record your purchased jewelry and maintenance history, providing comprehensive after-sales care—including free lifetime service—as well as special offers exclusively for members.

2. Gift Wrapping
Your purchase will be placed in our signature jewelry box, tied with a ribbon, and delivered to you. In addition, all items come with a warranty card, a shopping bag, a jewelry polishing cloth, and a message tag where you can write a personal note on the back.

3. Restringing
If you notice the string has become loose over time, we offer a restringing service.
Pearl-only products (single-strand, multi-strand)
Members can have their pearls restrung free of charge with no expiration date. For non-members, this service is provided free of charge only for manufacturing defects and only within one year of purchase. After one year, we will provide this service for a fee following a quote.

4. Cleaning
We recommend regular cleaning and maintenance so that you can continue to enjoy your purchased items in their beautiful condition for many years to come.
Cleaning When Pearls or Metal Parts Have Lost Their Luster
In store, for products made solely of pearls, we clean them on the spot, carefully wiping them with a special cloth. For other products, we will take them in for inspection and provide a quote; the service will then be performed for a fee. Depending on the condition, we may be unable to perform the service.

5. Repairs
If any of the following issues arise within the warranty period, we will repair, replace, or adjust the size free of charge:

• Material or manufacturing defects occurring within the scope of normal use
• Issues such as sizing problems resulting from continuous use

6. Free Shipping
We offer free flat-rate shipping anywhere in Japan. Delivery is available only within Japan.
If no delivery date is specified, we will ship your order as soon as it is ready. Please note that orders requiring engraving or similar services may take additional time.

7. Resale
Orv buys back Orv jewelry and passes it on to the next owner. (Coming Soon)

Through regular coral survey projects, marine debris cleanup projects, and nature classes on the beach, OWS promotes activities that allow people to “connect with nature, learn about nature, and convey the importance of nature” through the natural environment surrounding the ocean and the creatures that live there.

Orv’s Paper Products
We use eco-friendly materials, such as FSC-certified paper and cushioning materials made from recycled paper with a low environmental impact. FSC-certified paper is produced using wood from properly managed forests or recycled resources, under FSC certification—an international scheme operated by the Forest Stewardship Council that contributes to forest conservation. There are three types of labels: “FSC 100%,” “FSC Mix,” and “FSC Recycled.” Proper management (Chain of Custody, or CoC, certification) is required throughout the entire process of manufacturing, processing, and distribution. Such paper is used for environmentally friendly printed materials, and Orv’s paper products use “FSC Mix.”
